A French community located nearly 17,000 kilometers from mainland France, New Caledonia stretches out in a string of islands and islets in the heart of the Pacific Ocean and the Coral Sea. Renowned worldwide and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its lagoons and coral reefs, among the largest in the world, plunge visitors into a heavenly setting. Turquoise waters, exceptional seabed, wild vegetation and Kanak culture contribute to the authenticity of this ideal destination for holidays in the sun.
Grand Lagon Sud
At the southern tip of Grande Terre, in New Caledonia, the Grand Lagon Sud is one of the six lagoons classified as World Heritage by Unesco in 2008 for their incredible biodiversity. Seen from the sky, it forms a crescent made up of two distinct parts: the eastern part and the southern horn. It also gives a glimpse of the richness of the seabed for which it is famous. But you have to approach them to assess the extent of these natural treasures. Head for these marine wonders accessible just a few dozen miles from Noumea
Coral paradise
If the lagoons of New Caledonia are so renowned, it is primarily because their surface area offers an infinite playground for divers. The six marine areas formed by these lagoons extend over more than 40,000 km² and are home to the second largest barrier reef in the world , 1,600 kilometers long. And while there are only 1.5% of pristine coral reefs left in the world, a third are found in this area. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef in Australia or Hawaii, it has not been affected by waves of coral bleaching. Result: today, more than 400 species of coral cover and color the New Caledonian seabed.
Spend a night at the Whitsundays
In Australia , some 50 kilometers off Queensland and the small seaside town of Airlie Beach, parade the islands of the Whitsunday archipelago : 74 pieces of land emerged near the Great Barrier Reef, adorned with water clear, secluded beaches and hidden bays. Among them, a white sapphire, the Whitsunday Island and its heavenly Whitehaven Beach , a long strip of silica sand hemmed with a tropical forest: undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.. And because the cliché is sometimes good, go to Hill Inlet: from the belvederes stretch the 7 kilometers of beach of Whitehaven Beach "throwing" into an estuary whose shades of blue and green evolve according to the tides. A waking dream that you could extend by spending a night camping. Once you have obtained your permit issued by the Whitsunday Islands National Park , and as day visitors leave on their boats, you will remain almost alone on this little corner of lost paradise. A rare moment!
Fly over the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef
Visible from space, it stretches over 2,300 km and extends over nearly 350,000 km 2 to the northeast of the Australian coast: the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral complex in the world. A formidable “place to live” sheltering some 400 species of coral, 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 species of molluscs and 240 species of birds. A priceless natural marvel classified, since 1981, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come and sit in the front row of this unique show in the world, on the Reefworld pontoon , moored at the edge of Hardy Reef , “Hardy reef” . Placed on shallow and perfectly preserved waters, it will be yourprivileged vantage point of this exceptional ecosystem. Between snorkeling, scuba diving or exploration in a semi-submersible submarine: choose your mode of exploration. The platform also has an observation chamber. And for a limited number of Reefsleepers , there is also the possibility of spending a night under the stars on the pontoon. Another option is to take a scenic helicopter flight over the famous Heart Reef and fly over the real “heart” of the Great Barrier Reef.
Bathe in the natural pool of Oro Bay - Isle of Pines
Welcome to the Isle of Pines. As if clinging to the Tropic of Capricorn, south of Grande-Terre, in New Caledonia, it owes its name to Admiral James Cook who, when he first set foot on the island in 1774, marveled at the abundance columnar pines , these endemic trees of New Caledonia with majestic silhouettes. Now it's your turn to explore its treasures: aboard an outrigger canoe in Upi Bay . Inland, take on the Pic N'Ga or as far as the cave of Reine Hortense where the roots of the trees are engulfed in search of freshness. Or along the path bordering a discreet river of sand to reach the mythical natural swimming pool of Oro. In this basin carved out of the coral with dazzlingly clear waters, thousands of multicolored fish frolic before your eyes. Paradise is not far away, that's for sure! Note that it is possible to reach the Isle of Pines from Noumea aboard a small plane, flying over the breathtaking landscapes of the Grand Lagon Sud , one of the six lagoons classified as World Heritage by Unesco.
View local artworks at Santa Anna Island - Solomon Islands
Santa Ana Island , or Owaraha, is a small coral pearl in the Solomon Islands , Melanesia, east of San Cristobal Island (or Makira). Populated by fishermen and horticulturists, the warm Santa Ana is particularly renowned for its art of wood carving. Ceremonial bowls, paddles, slender clubs, figureheads of warrior canoes: sober and elegant works of black wood, delicately decorated with white motifs and adorned with polished shells, pyrites and mother-of-pearl, tridacne and scales of turtle… Objects to represent the relationships between men, between the living and the dead, and other supernatural entities. An ancestral art that testifies to a precious know-how. Just as music, song and dance punctuate the daily life of this Melanesian community, during ritual ceremonies, on special occasions or simply to welcome you.
