The Sub Antarctic Islands Cruise Deals are ideal for travellers looking for new and privileged adventures. And that is why our Ponant cruises in the subantarctic islands of New Zealandhave been designed especially with you in mind. These archipelagos at the end of the world are today the most isolated on the planet. Untouched by any human activity, they are home to a diversity of endemic plant and animal species unique in the world.
The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands are 5 of the 17 subantarctic islands that border the Southern Ocean. Located off the South Island of New Zealand, at the crossroads of Antarctic and subtropical influences, the archipelagos of Snares, Bounty, Antipodes, Auckland and Campbell Island, preserved from all human activity, are among the islands wildest on the planet. They form an ensemble classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its incredible biodiversity: a paradise for naturalists!
Penguins - More than just Happy Feet!
If penguins are emblematic of Antarctica, the Subantarctic islands are not left out. They are home to thousands of pairs and an extraordinary diversity of species: the famous gentoo and king penguins, rockhopper penguins, as well as lesser-known endemic species such as the Snares penguin, the crested penguin, the Schlegel penguin or the penguin antipodes, the rarest penguin species in the world.
The Nesting Albatross
Prince of the Southern Ocean, the majestic albatross notably finds refuge on the Subantarctic islands of New Zealand to reproduce every two or three years between two long periods of migration. Once adults, they leave their nest perched on the cliffs, precious runways. About ten different species can be observed on the different islands, including the black-browed albatross, howler, grey-headed, light-backed sooty or even the southern royal albatross.
Breeding Colonies & Marine Mammals
Along the long beaches that punctuate wide bays the rugged shores of these remote islands bask in numbers of sea lions and fur seals. Sea lions can be seen as far off the coast of New Zealand's South Island, but their main breeding colonies are in the subantarctic islands, including the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island.
Lush Flora
Going on a cruise in the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand means taking a trip to the heart of lush vegetation, in the southernmost forests of the world. The Islands are covered with endemic flora which has been able to adapt to the climate of these extreme latitudes and to develop thanks to the mildness provided by the warm currents which run through the region. The huge leaves and colorful flowers of the megaherbs and the scarlet canopy of the Southern rata forests form a striking backdrop.
As passengers you are lucky, because you can visit this polar landscape and be transient, passing by in comfort and warmth and total safety. The same can’t be said for the local wildlife, the gorgeous penguins, the giant polar bears, the migratory whales. Their’s is a daily battle of wit and survival amid bleak surroundings that is both challenging and beautiful.
