When you book one of our Ponant Falkland Islands Cruise Deals you will voyage in luxury with a world leader in expedition cruising.
The Falkland Archipelago, as it should be known, is located off the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego. It is an eye-opening paradise for lovers of ornithology and wild spaces. Its 750 sub-Antarctic islands and islets compose a varied fresco of landscapes . Reefs, plains and cliffs are home to many birds and marine mammals. It is located 400 km from the coast of Tierra del Fuego and 1,200 km from the extreme north of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands remain the perfect transition between Ushuaia, the starting point for cruises in Antarctica, and the White Continent. Meet in three highlights in this surprising archipelago.
Observe Seabirds
Look to the skies....ocean, dry land and air… the flight of birds is phenomenal and ubiquitous. This enchanting setting is home to many species of birds. Black-browed albatrosses leap from the cliffs to take flight, twirl in dizzying falls before skimming the crest of the waves. Threatened, they found in the cliffs of the Falkland Islands a refuge favorable to their reproduction, in summer.
The 100,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins, gentoo penguins, rockhopper penguins and imperial cormorants also nest there. Each species has its its own territory to thrive in.
On the small island of New Island, to the west of the archipelago, it is thus possible to observe a colony of rockhopper penguins, albatrosses and imperial cormorants. The Falkland Current, a cold ocean current located west of the Falklands, provides all these species with enough food to survive off.
Marine Mammals
The Falkland Islands nature reserves are home to many marine mammals. The small Commerson's dolphin, identifiable by its white and black colors, the Peale's dolphin, killer whales, sea lions and fur seals populate the shores.
At the heart of these protected waters, they sometimes accompany visitors upon their arrival, for moments suspended in time. They thus contribute to making the Falklands an essential stopover on a cruise to Antarctica.
Visit Port Stanley
Port Stanley, home to approximately 2,000 residents that claim British nationality. This former whaling station is the capital of the Falklands and its only real town. Windswept and wet a lot of the time it has an obvious “villagey” feel to it. What little colour there is stems from the brightly painted corrugated wooden houses and a handful of swirling union jacks. It is worth stepping ashore for a pint in one of the old pubs and to explore the local museum. The locals are friendly and full of tales of the 1982 war. Port Stanley even has a totem pole and a whalebone arch. It may be rugged and remote but it is also warm and welcoming.
