Discover our amazing Atlantic Islands and Canary Islands Cruises with Ponant.
With their distant neighbors of the Azores, Madeira or Cape Verde, the Canary Islands form Macaronesia, a vast region of the Atlantic characterized by these confetti of volcanic lands . The Canary Islands have been able to take advantage of these fertile soils while developing tourism that rhymes with relaxation.
Unquestionably the holiday playground for the British public, our Ponant Canary Islands Cruises offer pure pleasure and an escape from rainy days and cold fronts. As one journalist expounded, the weather in the Canary Islands is “happy weather.” It is much loved for having some of the best climate in the world tourists flock to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Their year-round mild temperatures (around 22 degrees Celsius) mean no over-the-top hot or cold days. You just have the healthiest life in the world and only the need to pack a T-shirt and shorts.
Explore Santa Cruz - Tenerife Island
Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and located in the northern part of the island. Travellers flock here in search of relaxation to soak up the warm sand. They will quickly leave the city to reach the beach of Las Teresitas further north, one of the most famous beaches in the Canary Islands . The others will appreciate discovering the center of Santa Cruz and its huge Spanish square refreshed by a large basin. Nearby, don't miss Place de la Candelaria with its white marble obelisk dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, patroness of the Canary Islands, or the Church of Our Lady of Concepción, built on the site of the first chapel built by the conquistadors in 1500. As for the auditorium, it presents a modern architecture, facing the sea.
Visit Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria
People like to split their time in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria between sunning on the superb beach of Las Canteras, lined with palm trees, and visits to the city. Starting with the historic center and the Vegueta district , listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, allows you to immerse yourself in the history of the Canary Islands. From the 15th century, Las Palmas was the anchorage point for the conquistadors, pirates, Dutch and Portuguese. From Santa Ana Square , guarded by bronze dogs, to the 19th century town hall, passing by Santa Ana Cathedral or the Columbus Museum, we cross the centuries from one street to another.
Hike the Bandama Crater - Gran Canaria
If the Canary Islands are renowned for their beaches, they are nonetheless volcanic islands , such as the archipelagos of Cape Verde , Madeira or the Azores. On Gran Canaria, an excursion to the Bandama crater allows you to descend into the caldera to a depth of 200 meters. The crater is protected by the walls of the volcano culminating at 574 meters, which has allowed a unique flora to develop. Among the endemic species, there is in particular the “Lady of Bandama”.
Teror - the religious captial of Gran Canaria
At Teror you find narrow cobbled streets, lined with potted green plants. Houses with walls sometimes whitewashed, sometimes colored. Finely crafted wooden balconies. Facing the seaside bustle of Las Palmas, Teror opposes the tranquility of a small town inland. A relative calm because Teror has become the religious capital of Gran Canaria since Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Virgin the island's patron saint in 1914. The basilica Nuestra Señora del Pino also houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, she appeared to shepherds in a pine tree in 1481. But Teror is also famous for its Sunday market. 200 years old, it is the oldest in the Canary Islands. Today, its 140 stalls present both craft and religious objects, fruit and vegetables and local products.
A day to explore Arrecife - Lanzarote Island
The island of Lanzarote is certainly one of the most arid of the Canary Islands, with completely lunar landscapes. As in the Azores, the vines are surrounded by volcanic rocks. The villages on the seafront stand out from the hilly scenery whose red earth offers a curious contrast. To look for a bit of freshness, bathers enjoy playa Del Reducto , in Lanzarote. The capital of the island is also home to Charca de San Ginés . This famous lagoon is home to a few pleasure and fishing boats which rock gently on the water in front of a string of whitewashed houses. An air of Greece… in the middle of the Atlantic.
