Central America is a true treasure chest and so much more than a link between the North and the South of a plural continent. The remains of the ancient Mayan civilization in the Yucatán peninsula is eye-opening and jaw-dropping. And this in contract to the Belize or Guatemala with their dense flora, unique in the world.
The colonial past which manifests itself in the architecture of many cities echoes works of international scope. Crossing the Panama Canal thus remains one of the major attractions of a cruise in Central America .
Experience a whole enchilada’s worth of rich culture and fun on a cruise to Mexico. Each port — including favorites Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta — contributes its own distinct local flavor to the mix. Whether your Mexico cruise style is west-coast Riviera with its Pacific charm, east-coast Caribbean and its island mojo… or perhaps Baja and its out-of-this-world coastal scenery, you’ll find Mexico central to a great vacation.
UNESCO listed natural sites - Sea of Cortez
During your Ponant cruise in Mexico, you will see how a multitude of islands line the coast along the Gulf of California. These 244 islands and protected areas were classified as World Heritage by Unesco in 2005. Among them, the volcanic and wild Coronado Island is home to an extremely rich biodiversity. A few kilometers away, the twin islands Espíritu Santo and La Partida , accessible only by boat, offer contrasting landscapes between sheer cliffs and turquoise bays.
Wildlife encounters - Sea of Cortez
The area's wildlife is also iconic in Los Islotes, home to a colony of California sea lions. Several hundred individuals have taken up residence on these islets with their red basalt cliffs. Not very shy, they can easily be approached, to the delight of swimmers and travelers aboard the Zodiac®.
In the bays of Huatulco, dolphins and Manta rays enchant in a sumptuous setting. The Sierra Madre mountains are followed by cliffs and lush vegetation of palm trees abounding on the white sand beaches. This is one of the most fabulous landscapes of a trip to Mexico.
Bahia de Loreto Marine National Park
Created in 1996, the Bahia de Loreto Marine National Park covers more than 2,000 km2 in the heart of the Sea of Cortez. Here you find an astonishing diversity of landscapes: cliffs, underwater canyons, marine terraces, mangroves... On Montserrat Island, also a UNESCO heritage site, the rock gives way to fine sandy beaches and translucent water. On the coast, south of the park, is the aptly named Puerto Agua Verde , where the water hues in dazzling shades of green and blue.
Cenotes - Yucatan
Incredible geological formations, chasms mixing captivating shades of blue and green and contrasts of light, sinkholes whose usefulness for the Mayas still remains mysterious… Emblematic of Yucatán, the cenotes fascinate. Their name comes from the Maya "dz'onot", which means "sacred well". Their importance was such for the pre-Columbian civilization that they inspired the name of the famous site of Chichén Itzá, 'Chi' being translated as 'mouth', 'Chén' as 'well' and 'Itzá' as 'water sorcerer'. Witchcraft, it is almost a question when one tries to elucidate their mysteries. Places of human sacrifices for some, tombs for the remains of young children for others: the cenotes have not yet revealed their secrets. In the meantime, today they offer breathtaking bathing spots. During your Mexico cruise, visit Cenote Chaak Tun , where the pure water reflects the towering shadows of stalactites and hanging vines.
Palenque - Yucatan
Considered the most beautiful Mayan site in Mexico, the ancient city of Palenque appears like a mirage in the heart of the tropical jungle of Chiapas. Its remains plunge the visitor into the heart of the Maya civilization and the questions it leaves unanswered. Founded in 100 BC, the city prospered for a millennium to become one of the most important cities of pre-Columbian times, with a complex agricultural and commercial network. Imposing temples, impressive tombs, majestic palaces and priceless works of art still reflect today the magnitude of Palenque in a world still as enigmatic for researchers.
Tulum - Yucatan
Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans until the 15th century, even after the arrival of the conquistadores. Located on the edge of a cliff over six kilometers long, facing the Caribbean Sea, this fortified city was placed at the crossroads of maritime and land trade routes. Hence the importance it has held in the region both economically and culturally and religiously. The temples, the altars, the Castillo , the residential buildings and the frescoes present on many buildings confirm the attractiveness of Tulum. Abandoned during the 16th century, today it is one of the emblematic sites not to be missed during a trip to Yucatán.
