Jewels of cruises in Central America, Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala are full of national parks with extraordinary vegetation and fauna, beaches conducive to relaxation, some of the most breathtaking diving spots in the world and sites Mayas testifying to the richness of this still mysterious civilization. All in countries that have established serenity and well-being as a true way of life.
Manuel Antonio National Park - Puntarenas, Costa Rica
The smallest protected area in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio National Park is not the least rich. Located on the country's Pacific coast, it spans both land and water. Moreover, here the border is thin between primary and secondary forests, mangroves, beaches and marine environments. A visit to the park is as much an opportunity to observe sloths, monkeys, coatis, iguanas, snakes and dozens of species of birds, as it is to take advantage of the strips of white sand hemmed in by clear water. It is no coincidence that the park was selected by Forbes magazine as one of the twelve most beautiful parks in the world.
The Great Blue Hole - 80 kms from Belize city
The Great Blue Hole sits in the middle of Lighthouse Atoll. This underwater cenote, 300 meters in diameter and 124 meters deep, the largest of its kind, is protected by a coral reef. Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who considered it one of the ten main diving spots in the world, contributed to its notoriety.
The Tree Canopy - Costa Rica
To vary the points of view, it is better to gain height and touch the treetops. Several parks in central Costa Rica offer to climb between 12 and 60 meters in height using footbridges, zip lines and other cable cars. A dive into the heart of the tropical forest where the mist of humidity mixed with the luxuriant vegetation presents an enchanting picture.
Livingston - mouth of the Rio Dulce, Guatemala
Unique in Guatemala, the city of Livingston was built by the Garifuna, descendants of slaves, and is steeped in Caribbean culture. The city, accessible only by boat, is also nicknamed the “Caribbean pearl of Guatemala”. This very special enclave located in the east of the country, at the mouth of the río Dulce, offers an exotic base. In town, dancers, Garifuna music groups, close to reggae, and local cuisine reflect this atmosphere close to the Caribbean. In the surroundings, the white sand beaches and the water points fed by waterfalls in the heart of the forest allow privileged bathing.
Savegre river boat ride - Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Take the paddles and go down one of the most beautiful rivers in Central America. The Río Savegre is renowned for its banks laden with lush vegetation. White ibises, cormorants, egrets and herons frolic along the water's edge, while crocodiles bask in the sun. Thanks to the explanations and the accompaniment of experienced guides, the river and its environment can be discovered in a fun and educational way. Wildlife observation is facilitated by the professional equipment carried by the guides and their knowledge of the terrain.
Curu Nature Reserve - Nicoya Peninsuala, Costa Rica
Groups of howler monkeys and capuchins bicker in the trees under the disillusioned eye of sloths. Below, the coatis rummage in the carpets of leaves, while the crabs, fearful, run to their burrow. The luckiest visitors will also be able to observe deer. In the sky, two by two, the macaws show the way to the bowels of this incredible forest. It must be said that the Curú nature reserve, on the Nicoya peninsula, is particularly preserved from the tourist tumult.
Lake Atitlan
Considered “the most beautiful lake in the world” by the German geographer Alexander von Humboldt, Lake Atitlán has always fascinated. The Mayas settled there more than 2,000 years ago and still have a special cult to it. While recovering in Guatemala after a plane crash in 1938, the French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry even found inspiration there for his Little Prince. Its clear waters overlooked by the San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán volcanoes, all culminating at more than 3,000 meters above sea level, invite contemplation. We then understand why this endorheic lake, the deepest in Central America, which occupies a caldera formed 84,000 years ago, has been a source of inspiration for many writers.
