All our Ponant Micronesia Cruises are highly sought after, not just for the beauty they behold, but the deep historical events that happened there. There are many souls that have born witness to these remarkable islands, the wrecks that lie below the ocean a testament to the brutal past.
The Island of Guam
Discovered by Magellan in 1521, the island of Guam was claimed by the Spaniards in 1565. In the main city of the Micronesian archipelago, Agana, a few buildings and monuments such as Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad or Skinner's Plaza, still testify of this colonial past. Today, the largest of the islands of Micronesia is placed under American administration. Appreciated for its long beaches bordered by clear water, the island is also the cradle of the Chamorro civilization, inhabitants of the place long before the Europeans. Skilled craftsmen, they are famous for weaving colored carpets in particular.
Dive the underwater wrecks of the Chuuk Lagoon
Considered one of the best diving spots in the world, Chuuk Lagoon is best known for its veritable underwater museum of wrecks. No less than a hundred ships, tankers, submarines and planes from the Second World War bear witness to the conflict between Japan and the United States in the Pacific. They are easily accessible from 15 to 40 meters deep in particularly well sheltered bottoms. It is possible to observe a multitude of objects, ranging from weapons to crockery, transported by these buildings before they were sunk. Over the years, the wrecks have become real artificial reefs where the corals and the fauna that accompany them develop.
The remote Caroline and Yap Islands
Pulap, Satawal, Gaferut… These three isolated atolls offer both idyllic navigation between splendid islands and surprising discoveries. Underwater, many wrecks dating from the Second World War are a delight for divers. The shores alternate between fine sandy beaches and coasts planted with mangroves. The few villagers welcome visitors warmly and share their traditions through dance demonstrations in particular. The Satawal atoll is also known for the know-how of its inhabitants in terms of navigation based on astronomical knowledge.
